Begin with a reflection.
Spend a few minutes with Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. In this reflection, I consider the care she brings to an ordinary task, and what we might learn from it.

From Tom’s original introduction to this reflection.
We have looked at her before.
A woman standing at a table.
Bread in the foreground.
Light entering from the left.
Milk pouring in a thin, steady stream.
Nothing dramatic is happening, and yet the whole room seems gathered around her care.
The painting hangs in the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour, among some of the great works of Dutch art. But Vermeer does not ask us to look upward first.
He asks us to look closely.
At work.
At attention.
At the quiet dignity of doing one thing well.
Maybe that is the right place to begin.
